Katsuya Terada’s ‘Terra’s Black Marker’

Posted in ART with tags , on May 17, 2011 by ducobi

Opened recently at Compound Gallery is the solo exhibition ‘Terra’s Black Marker’ by Japanese artist Katsuya Terada. Known for his contributions to film and video games, his work is also harvested in the comic series ‘Money King’ published through Dark Horse comics. His exhibition features stunningly kinetic works created entirely with black markers. The simplicity of the medium contrasts with the dazzlingly complex compositions; a fanciful world filled with the noble elegance of coiling dragons, a pale skinned beauty and other creatures caught inthe moment of flight or movement. Take a peek at the rest of the show below.

3D Paintings on Panes of Glass

Posted in ART with tags , , , on January 29, 2011 by ducobi

Using multiple layers of clear glass, Canada based David Spriggs and Chinese born Xia Xiaowan, transform flat artwork into 3D sculptures. Viewers are treated to different shifting perspectives of the works based on where they stand in the art space. Spriggs work revolves around powerful explosive imagery, often resembling storms, cosmic blasts or firework like explosions. Xiawan’s “spatial paintings,” which often feature distorted figures, are drawn individually using colored pencil on tinted glass. Only when these pieces are combined on their floor racks do the images create the whole hologram like effect.

Apple Destroyed Products by Michael Tompert and Paul Fairchild

Posted in ART with tags , , on November 24, 2010 by ducobi

This is almost worthy of a NSFW warning, Michael Tompert and Paul Fairchild spent several months buying the newest and greatest in Apple products before creatively destroying them in order to create this series of photos.

“Tompert said the idea for the project came to him after he gave each of his two sons an ipod touch for christmas. he said the two boys fought over one of the devices, which had a certain game on it. fed up with the quarrel, tompert said he grabbed one of the ipods and smashed it on the ground.

‘they were kind of stunned – the screen was broken and this liquid poured out of it. I got my camera to shoot it,’ tompert said. ‘my wife told me that i should do something with it.’

in all, tompert created 12 images of destroyed apple products, working with his friend paul fairchild, a photographer. ‘they had to be a brand-new product,’ tompert said. ‘it’s not about destroying old products. it’s about our relationship with the new.’

his methods of destruction varied by gadget. to destroy an iphone 3g device, he used a heckler & koch handgun to blow a hole through it. to obliterate a set of ipod nanos, he placed the devices on a train track so that a locomotive would run over them.”
